Circular line-art seal design
Geometric · Black and grey · Flash
A standalone black line drawing of a circular seal enclosed by a double ring. Inside, arcs, small circles, connecting straight lines and dot clusters form an asymmetric geometric pattern. The drawing uses uniform outlines on a plain white background with no shading or colour, and the design fills the frame evenly.

The seal would not take in the wax the first three times, and Mrs Okonedo, who keeps the archive at Harrowgate Quay, said that was because I had drawn the small circles too eager. Set them lazy, she told me, like cats on a windowsill. So I did. I copied the lower arc from the brass plate in the strongroom, then the trail of three dots that falls off the left edge like sparks from a grinding wheel, and I counted them twice before I put my pen down.

The straight rods were the difficulty. Two of them run between the circles like a pair of stays holding up a mast, and the clerk before me had joined them the wrong way round. Mrs Okonedo laid a ruler across my drawing and moved one end a hair's width to the north. The seal, she said, is only a key when the lines agree with each other, and a key that is almost right is worse than none, because it teaches the lock to refuse you.
The Marigold Vane sails on Tuesday's ebb with the sealed box in the captain's cabin, and nobody aboard is to know what it holds except the man who sealed it. I pressed the stamp down on Sunday night and lifted it slowly. The wax had risen into every circle and every arc, and three of the four dots had come up clean and raised. The fourth had not. Mrs Okonedo looked at the blank spot for a long time and then said that the captain would be carrying that one himself.
