Heart pendant anklet tattoos on both ankles

Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

Two matching tattoos show thin chain anklets wrapping each ankle, with a shaded heart pendant hanging from each chain. The heart pendants have grey shading that gives them a slightly three-dimensional look, while the chains are drawn in dark linework. The photograph is taken from above, with both feet and ankles filling the frame against a plain carpet.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Brother Anselm cast the two hearts from one mould in the winter the river froze, and he gave them to the twin girls who carried water up the mountain path to the house of Saint Ebba. The chains came from the smith in the valley, fine as wheat stalks, and the girls were told they must never take them off, because a chain broken in the cold will not mend until spring.

Their names were Hild and Mabel, and they were not alike in anything but their hands. Hild went down to the market at Orme each week and came back with salt and gossip. Mabel stayed on the ridge with the goats and the bell rope, and she rang the hours so the walkers on the snow road could find the way. Each evening they compared the hearts in the firelight, rubbing the grey tarnish with a thumb until the shadows sat right in the curve.

The winter Mabel went missing, the bell rang on without her. Hild climbed the ridge every night for nine nights, and on the ninth she found the rope wound twice round a post and a single chain link lying in the snow, bent open. She did not cry. She went back down, sold her own heart to the smith, and had him solder it to the broken link so the chain could close again.

Then in spring the rope was pulled by a hand from below the ridge, and Mabel came up the path with frost in her hair, laughing that the bell had told her the way home. Hild said nothing. She only held out her ankle to show the new link, and Mabel held out hers, and the two hearts swung together in the thin light.
