Matching sisters heart tattoos on feet
Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo
Two matching tattoos show a heart outline with the word Sisters written in cursive script inside it. The linework is thin and black, with the lettering flowing into the curve of the heart. Both tattoos sit on the feet against a striped fabric background, with a slight difference in angle between them.

Our mother always said Porthlow had one proper song, and it was the winch chain knocking against the quay at slack water. Nell heard it the morning she left, sitting on the bollard with her boots unlaced, pretending to fiddle with a knot. I stood on the wheelhouse steps of Constance, our father's old crabber, and said nothing, because she had always been the one who did the talking while I waited on the wharf to be told where to stand.

We had the ink done the spring we turned seventeen, in a back room above the chandlery on Fore Street. The man who did it had forearms like mooring rope and a wireless murmuring the shipping forecast under his breath. Nell chose the heart and the word, Sisters, looped through its curve in a slanting hand she had copied from a biscuit tin. She wanted it low on the foot, where nobody at chapel would see. I wanted it where I could check it every morning. The needle stung like a wasp, and she laughed through the whole thing and squeezed my wrist until I bruised.
Her ferry went on the Tuesday with the kit bag already packed, bound for Aberdeen and a processing plant that paid better than anything Porthlow would ever offer. For a month I checked the post every afternoon and told myself the heart would hold. Then, on a grey morning when the boat rolled hard and I braced a boot against the rail, I caught the ink in the light. The word ran out past the curve of the heart the way a line runs off a cleat, not cut, not finished, just paid out a little further every time the tide turned.
