Matching infinity and heart wrist tattoos

Fine line · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

Two hands rest together, each showing a matching tattoo of a black infinity symbol woven with a red outlined heart. The linework is thin and sketchy, with soft grey shading on the black sections and a slightly feathered red line. The tattoos sit against plain skin on a black and white patterned background, with the upper design on the wrist and the lower one on the hand.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The generator coughed twice before the waltzer caught, and by then Dessie had already stopped the cars with his boot against the floor and was drawing on the back of a ticket with the red biro he kept behind his ear. "Hold still," he said, though I wasn't moving. He always drew the same thing when the fair was packing up: a figure eight lying on its side, with a heart looped through the middle, the pen going round twice so the red line went soft at the edges.

He said his mother had taught him that the sign never ends, that you could run your finger round it forever and never find the place you started. I asked if that was why he drew it instead of writing letters. He said letters were for people who expected to be somewhere on Tuesday. We were on a patch of car park behind a Co-op in Hartlepool, and the wind kept lifting the striped awnings off the stalls as if it were trying to read them.

Lorcan, the rigger, came over that night with his thermos and found us sitting in the cab. He looked at the ticket and laughed, then stopped, because Dessie had pushed it into my hand and was already walking towards the lorries. "Keep that one," he called back. "Mine's on the cab wall." I folded it into my purse and it stayed there through three winter pitches and a flood in Lincoln.

When the season opened again in March, I went back to the waltzer alone. Dessie's biro was lying on the ride controls where he'd left it. I drew the loop once, then again, the red going thin on the second pass the way his always had, and then I went to see whether the cars would still turn.
