Swirl and star ankle tattoos
Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
Two small tattoos sit on the outer ankles of a pair of feet, each showing a looping, swirled ornamental motif with several small five-pointed stars. The linework is thin and solid black, with no shading, and the tattoos are set against bare skin on a carpeted floor. A faint blue-grey star is also visible on the top of one foot near the toes.

Fenn, you will think me mad, but the mistake was mine and I have hidden it under three layers of gall ink. Yesterday, while finishing the initial for the Book of Hours, I let my pen wander into the margin to rest my wrist. I drew a spiral, a curl like the tail of a sleeping cat, and then the stars came without my asking, five-pointed and small, as if someone had flicked ink from the brush. I meant to scrape them away with the pumice before Prior Osric saw. The vellum was too fine. The lines bit in and would not lift.
Now the abbot has asked to see the page, and he is delighted. He says the flourish belongs to no hand in the house and is older than our rule. I have told him it is a fault. He says a fault that pleases God is a gift. I no longer know what I believe.
Come to the library after compline. Bring the good knife. I want you to look at the stars with me and tell me whether a star is still a star when a tired man's wrist has made it at the wrong hour. Burn this letter when you have read it.
