Heart pierced by a dagger sketch
Black and grey · Flash
A pencil drawing of an open heart outline with a dagger passing through its lower left side, the blade exiting at the lower right with a short stroke trailing below. The linework is bold and slightly rough, with darker shading along the heart's upper curve and the blade's edges. The plain off-white paper and spiral binding at the top of the frame form the background.

Sit down on that upturned bucket, love, and mind the mint, it bruises if you tread on it. You want to know about the knife. My grandfather carried a grafting knife with a blade shaped like a fish's tail, and he took it everywhere in the orchard, because a tree will forgive a lot but never a blunt cut.

The year the frost came late in May, the old pear by the wall split right down its trunk. Everyone said pull it out and be done. He sat on the wall with that knife and a jar of wax and said no, a split is only a wound that hasn't finished healing. He cut the bark clean, pressed the two halves back together, and bound them with a strip torn from his own shirt. Then he drew on the brick in chalk, a heart with the knife driven through its lower side, and told my gran it was a promise to the tree and not to her. She said she never believed a word of it.
The pear lived. It gave hard little fruit for forty years, and every October somebody would find the chalk heart faded on the brick, and nobody ever rubbed it out. When I finally shifted that bucket last spring, the chalk was still there under the ivy, the blade as neat as the day he drew it, and the pear was still leaning on its bandage, pretending it had never been broken.
