Ada found the piping bag still warm on the steel bench, its nozzle crusted with yesterday's buttercream and a rubber band wound tight around the top. Behind her the oven ticked as it cooled. Beyond the shop window the road was grey and empty, and the milk van had not yet turned the corner.

She had until six to finish the Halloran cake, a plain white round that needed a heart on the lid. Her father had always said a heart should be drawn in one breath, like a bird landing on a wire, so she held her own breath and lowered the nozzle. The first curve came out too thick, the second too wide. She scraped it off with a palette knife and muttered at the cake until the lid was smooth again.

The Hallorans had met at this counter, two strangers reaching for the same last custard tart on a wet Saturday. They had come in every week since, and last month Mr Halloran had asked for something that would say what he could not manage over the till. Ada had promised him words in icing, nothing more elaborate than that.

She let the heart's point taper into a long tail and curled it back on itself, crossing once, the way her father used to loop the tails of his letters. Then she wrote the word in slanting script, the l tall, the o closing like a knot. When the sun finally cleared the rooftops across the road, the icing had set, and the loop at the base looked as though it had never been anything but whole.
