Heart outline with script lettering
Lettering · Black and grey · Flash
A pencil drawing of an open-topped heart outline on pale paper, with a loose, slanted cursive script running down its left side. The heart is drawn with a single heavier line that thickens along the right edge, and light white smudges surround the lower part of the sketch. The design is black and grey, with the composition centred and the lettering sitting inside and along the curve of the heart.

The note was tucked under the jam jar on the packing shed windowsill, written in pencil on the back of a seed catalogue. Dad's capitals had always leaned left, but these letters tipped forward as if they were late for a bus. I'm fine, it said. Don't let Mrs Okonedo have the Bramleys.

I read it twice on the ladder in the Cox's rows, with wasps drowsing in the windfalls and the late August light going thick and gold over the grass. Tom had driven up from Bristol on the Friday and spent the whole weekend being careful with the kettle. Careful was how we knew something was wrong. Dad had been sitting on the bench by the gate since breakfast with his bad hip stuck out in front of him, shelling peas he had no intention of cooking.
When I came down with the bag he was drawing on the back of a paper sack from the feed merchant's. A heart, open at the top, one hard line thickening down the right side as if he had leaned on the pencil. He had written the words along the left curve, sloping down towards the bottom point, and they ran off the edge of the sack before he could finish them.
"Your gran did that with her cake tins," he said, not looking up. "Drew the shape she wanted, then filled it in with whatever was in the cupboard."
He blew the crumbs of graphite from the paper, held it out, and I saw that the bottom of the heart had the same dip as the Discovery I'd cut open that morning, the one with the star of seeds at its centre. I didn't say so. I just sat beside him, took the pea pods from his lap, and we split the rest of the afternoon between us.
