Heart with banner and daisies on an upper arm
Traditional · Upper arm · Colour · Photo
A colour tattoo of a red heart with a white banner reading NOT YOU, framed by yellow daisies with green leaves and two black arrows. The bold black outlines and flat fills are typical of traditional American tattooing. The upper arm is photographed against a black and white daisy-print top, with a plain pale wall behind.

Desmond Pratt had asked Mabel Ruddock to marry him on the first Saturday of every April for eleven years, and every April she had said something different. Once it was "Ask me when the gulls stop nicking the chips." Once it was "Wait till your mother's dead, Des, she'll never forgive either of us." He took the answers the way the tide takes sandcastles, without fuss, and came back the following spring with a fistful of daisies pulled from the verge by the lifeboat slip.

This year the daisies were wilting before he reached the counter. He had walked the whole length of the harbour wall with them clenched in his fist, and the stalks had gone limp and green-black at the ends. Mabel watched him set them down beside the tea urn, then watched him kneel, one knee cracking on the planks, the way a man kneels when he has practised it in the bath.
She did not let him finish. She reached under the counter for the tin where she kept the pressed daisies from the other years, eleven of them flattened between sheets of brown paper, and laid a fresh bloom on top. Then she took the marker and wrote on a bit of card from the till roll, in capitals that would read from across the quay: NOT YOU. She pinned it to the hatch, right where the tide tables usually went.
Desmond read it, nodded slowly, and picked up his daisies. Mabel took the tin and shut the lid on the twelfth one, and somewhere out on the water a gull had the good sense to say nothing at all.
