Sunflower on the upper arm
Botanical · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A single sunflower head is tattooed on the outer upper arm, shown in a close crop against plain skin and a loose grey top. The petals are outlined in bold black strokes with some shading toward their tips, while the centre is filled with fine stippled dots and grey tones. The design is in black and grey only and sits low-centre in the frame.

The marquee smells of cut grass and warm sugar, and every jam jar on the trestles holds a sunflower from Marjorie's plot behind the bowls club in Hadleigh. You count fourteen before the speeches start. A toddler in a yellow romper is trying to pick the seeds from the nearest head with a teaspoon, and you let her, because your sister has never once minded a mess.

Uncle Dennis stands up with a sheaf of notes he has clearly rewritten in the car park. He talks about the summer Marjorie's flowers all went over at once, heads bowed as if listening for something, and how she cut every one before the goldfinches could get to it. She kept the seeds in an old biscuit tin, he says, and labelled each packet in pencil. He says it so gently that the room goes quiet, and you find yourself looking at the dark, speckled centres of the blooms and thinking they look like they were drawn by someone with all the time in the world, one dot at a time.
Afterwards, while the band tunes up, Marjorie finds you by the bar. She presses a brown envelope into your hand, flat and light. Inside is a single dried head, its petals gone the colour of old paper, and a note in pencil that reads: Keep the seeds, love. M. You don't know what she means by it, not yet. You slide the envelope into your jacket, against your ribs, and go to find the dance floor.
