Infinity heart with script lettering
Lettering · Black and grey · Flash
A drawing of an infinity symbol with a heart shape forming one loop, with small cursive script words written along the curves. The linework is bold and dark with soft grey shading on the ribbon-like strokes, and the design sits centred on a plain white background.

The ship Greywater left Bristol with a cook who could not swim and a girl named Ada Penhallow, who had three words sewn into the lining of her coat in her mother's grey thread: forever, imagine, live. She said them at night like knots she was tying, one for each line of rope she could reach from her hammock.

The voyage ran long. They went south past the ice shelves and round the Horn, where the sea turned the colour of slate, and the captain lost two men to fever and one to the rigging. Ada kept the reckoning book, and each evening she drew the day's course on the chart as a loop, because the winds on that route carried them round and round the same grey latitudes. The sailors called it the hook. Old Dunstan swore a ship that ran the hook would never see home, and Ada, who was eleven, told him the loop was only a road that bent back on itself.
They turned for England in the fourth year. On the morning the coast showed, the cook, who had lost his fear of water somewhere off the Falklands, handed her a pencil. She drew the loop once more, closed it, and wrote the three words back along the curve so that the first word touched the last. Then she folded the coat over her arm and went up to watch the land come closer.
