Red heart with black scrollwork

Mixed · Flash

A large red heart with a glossy gradient sits at the centre of a symmetrical arrangement of black curling scrollwork, with small black dots and thin white outlines. Several smaller red hearts are scattered among the swirls. The design is shown as a clean digital drawing on a plain white background, with solid black linework and smooth colour fills.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The big wheel had been stuck at the top for twenty minutes when Nell finally gave up on the ticket booth and climbed onto the generator box to see who was shouting. It was Dale from the coconut shy, waving a red balloon at the lad on the ground who had let go of his string. The balloon was shaped like a heart, and it was drifting over the candyfloss van, trailing its ribbon like a bad idea.

Nell had sold hearts for three summers now, cut from red felt and stitched onto the tombola prizes by her gran, who swore the glossy ones were a sin to hand out. Every stall on the field had a version of the same thing: hearts painted on the swing boats, hearts stamped on the rock cake tins, a heart in neon over the door of the palmist, who had never once mentioned it to anyone. Nell had decided years ago that love at a fair was mostly about curly paint and whoever had the nerve to queue.

The balloon snagged on the top of the wheel, right beside the gondola where her brother Tom was stuck with a girl from the hook-a-duck. Tom waved both arms. The girl waved back with a stuffed swan. Nell laughed so hard she nearly toppled off the generator, and Dale, below, shook his head and went back to his ducks.

When the wheel lurched and started turning again, the balloon slipped free and drifted off over the car park, bright as a shout. Nell pocketed the ribbon end that had come loose in her hand and kept it, because it was a ribbon and a fair always needed one more.
