Sketchy heart tattoo in pink and purple
Other · Mixed · Photo
A heart outline is drawn in loose, sketchy black lines, with a second offset outline beside it. The heart is filled with soft pink, purple and orange shading, and streaks of pink, purple and blue fan out behind it like motion lines. The tattoo sits on smooth skin, with the image cropped closely around it.

Hush now, the lamp is nearly out, so you'll have to listen with your ears and not your eyes. Mira Okonedo was the last person on the Halden Rise who could still hold a pencil without shaking, and through the fourth winter she drew the same shape over and over on the backs of ration slips. A heart, she called it. Nobody aboard had seen one drawn that way since the old Earth books were pulped for paper.

The ship's council wanted her drawing star charts instead. They said a loose line wasted paper, and a wasted line could kill you when you were threading a course through the dust. So she drew the charts, neat as a bird's foot, and at night she drew the heart again, going over it twice and leaving a second outline beside the first, because she never could get one line to agree with itself.
When the ice storm came off the dust belt in the sixth year, the navigators saw nothing but grey on their screens. Mira climbed to the observation blister with a tin of old pigments and a brush made from the cat's tail, and she painted what she had seen in her sleep: streaks of rose and violet fanning back from one fierce point. The council called it nonsense. Then the storm thinned, and the shimmer of the real thing ran past the glass exactly as she had painted it, pink, then purple, then blue at the edges, a comet trailing its own heartbeat.
They still call that stretch of sky the Loose Line. Children draw it on their palms before bed, one heavy outline and a second beside it, and they never get the two to agree. That, Mira always said, was the whole point.
