Below the workroom window the 38 bus sighed at the kerb and pulled away, throwing a yellow stripe across the peach chiffon hanging from the hook. She had cut the skirt on the bias so it would move like water when somebody walked, and it had taken three nights to get the hem to fall right.

Her client had been firm about the back. Nothing but a deep V of skin and a line of light down the spine, she'd said. Nell had pencilled a tiny arrow on the inside of the facing, pointing up, the way her mother marked grain on every pattern piece. Beside it she had drawn a jagged line, a heartbeat, to count the rows of beads by. Nobody would ever see either mark. That was the point of a lining.

At half past twelve the courier rang from the street. Nell carried the gown down the stairs over one arm, the sequins clicking softly against each other like a handful of dropped change. The rain had stopped, and the wet pavement held the streetlamps in long bright smears. She watched the car door close on the hanger through the glass.

Back upstairs, she switched off the lamp and sat in the dark with her hands in her lap. The window showed the city, the bus stop, the blurred glow of the chip shop opposite. She thought about the small arrow inside the dress, still pointing up toward whatever came next, and she found she was smiling at nothing.
