The old silversmith in Kharsang would only sell his filigree by weight, and he never asked what a customer meant to do with it. I learned that my first week up at his workshop, carrying my father's brass dies and a debt I could not pay. He sat me on a stool by the window, where the light came off the pass in a flat white sheet, and handed me wire no thicker than a hair.

For a month I drew mandalas on slate with a nail. Every petal had to close on itself, he said, or the whole thing would unravel the first time it met warm skin. He made me solder a rosette the size of my palm, then cut it into eight and rebuild it, and when I wept over the cracked joins he only laughed and said the pass taught the same lesson to every road. The caravans came over in autumn, and the women who bought his work wanted pieces that caught the light when they moved.

The last thing he gave me was a long pendant, a tapering column of scrolls with a tiny silver bell hung from its foot. He told me to make it for the caravan leader's daughter, who was leaving with the first snow. I worked three nights by lamp with my fingers blistered, and on the fourth morning I carried it down the path wrapped in cloth. She was waiting at the gate beside the mules, and she took it from me without a word and held it up so the bell swung free and caught the wind.

I told her silver outlasts gold in the cold. She laughed and said that was the first lie the pass ever taught her. Then the caravan moved up into the white, and I stood at the gate with a spool of wire in my hand and the thin note of that bell still ringing somewhere above me.
