Mrs Okafor had been pinning the same bow for three evenings when Nell finally asked what it was for. The silk had gone soft at the folds from being turned and turned again, and the pearls along the back seam were still dull where the lamp didn't reach.

"For a man who never looks at backs," Mrs Okafor said. "He looks at faces. The bow is for the moment he turns round and sees the dress from behind."

Nell had sewn four hundred pearls that week, each one stitched with a double thread so the straps would bear a dancing weight. Her thimble had worn a groove into her middle finger. She knew the gown better than her own coat, and still she had not understood the lining. On the last night, with the big mirror turned to face the wall and the shop smelling of steam and starch, Mrs Okafor unpicked a hem inside the bow and showed her a line of tiny backstitches. Someone had written a short word in thread the colour of the silk, so that no one standing in front of it would ever see it at all.

"Read it from the other side," she said.

Nell turned the mirror back round. In the glass the word ran the right way, and she laughed, and then she had to sit down on the cutting table among the offcuts.
