Script quote on upper back
Fine line · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A woman seen from behind wears a black dress with a strappy cut-out back and walks along a path. A thin black script reading The only exception sits on her upper back near the shoulder, and a small line-drawn circular symbol appears on her forearm near the wrist. The photo is in colour, with a soft blurred green background and warm natural light.

In the village of Sallow Ford, the rule was older than the church bell: after dusk, nobody walked past the last gate on the wood path. Mothers taught it to children before they could spell their own names, and carters turned their horses at the stone with the iron ring set into it, out of habit more than fear.

Then one autumn the tanner's widow, Ada Penrose, took a lantern and a heel of bread and walked through the gate anyway. Her neighbours gathered at the stone and argued over whether she would come back at all. She did, at first light, with a wet hem and a bundle of blackthorn, and she laid the thorns on the table without a word. Everyone had a question. Nobody asked it.
The old men will tell you the gate itself had always carried the answer, if anyone had bothered to scrub the moss from the lintel. Ada had done it the week before she left. Under the green, in letters worn thin by rain, it read: keep the path, the only exception being the one who carries the light.
Each spring after that, someone from the village walked the wood at dusk with a lantern, and the iron ring on the stone gave one soft note, like a bell that had been waiting to be asked.
