Fine line black tattoo of a heart formed by a heartbeat trace, ending in the word sisters in script, on the inner upper arm.

Heartbeat heart with 'sisters' on upper arm

Fine line · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

A thin black outline shows a heart at the left that flows into a heartbeat trace, which runs right into the cursive word sisters. The linework is delicate and even, with no shading, and the ink is black against the skin. The arm fills most of the frame, with framed tattoo flash visible on the wall behind it.

Ruth had been watching the monitor above bed nine for forty minutes when the trace finally settled into something she could live with. Flat lines were easy to read. It was the small jags in between that kept her awake, the way a rhythm could look fine and still be wrong.

Her sister Bea had phoned at ten, the way she always did on Thursdays, and said she was sitting in the Co-op car park because the kitchen at home was too quiet. Ruth told her to go home and feed the cat. Bea laughed and said the cat was a tyrant who needed nothing from anyone, which was the one thing about Bea that had never changed since they were nine and sharing a bunk in Fleetwood.

At four the registrar came through with a clipboard and a face that meant good news was on its way but had not arrived yet. Ruth printed the strip from the machine by the sluice, folded it twice and slid it into the pocket of her tunic, where it sat against her ribs like a letter she had not decided whether to send.

At half six, handover done, she walked out past the lifts into the grey light and sat on the low wall by the bins. Her phone showed one missed call. She pressed the number, and when Bea answered before the first ring finished, Ruth unfolded the strip against her knee and read it aloud, the spikes and the flat stretches, as though she were reading a sentence neither of them had written yet.
