Faith script on the hip

Lettering · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo

A close photograph of a small black script tattoo on the outer side of a hip or upper thigh. The word faith is written in a thin, looping cursive, with a small swirl and a short dash above it. The ink is solid black on pale skin, and the frame is tightly cropped around the tattoo with dark clothing at the top edge.

Mind the flour on the step, love, and don't sweep it, because it's been there since the winter and the sparrows come for it at six. You'll want to hear this before the ovens are lit. I'm too old to tell it twice.

When Ada Crouch came up the lane in 1931 with a cracked pot and her dead husband's coat, the bakehouse on Tanner's Row had been shut for eleven months. Nobody wanted the oven. Everybody wanted the starter, a grey paste of wild yeast that had gone quiet in its crock under the sink. Ada fed it oatmeal and river water every morning before the light came, and she talked to it the way you'd talk to a horse that didn't trust you. The other bakers laughed at her. Her loaves came out flat as roof slates.

Then one morning the dough rose over the lip of the tin in a slow curl, like a ribbon unrolling off a spool, and she chalked one word on the slate by the door so she'd remember it: faith. She didn't mean the church kind, she said. She meant the small thing you do when you can't see the proof working. A short stroke for the pause, a loop for the turn, the way the crust splits open when it's ready and not a minute before.

Ada baked on Tanner's Row for forty-one years. The slate's still there, under the flour dust, and the crock still lives under the sink. Every dawn, before the first tray goes out, I lift the lid and listen for it breathing. Go on now. The sparrows are at the step, and that's your cue to hush.
