A close photograph of the word beautiful written in a thin, flowing cursive script in black ink, rising diagonally across the skin. A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The hoarding behind the Regal had to be finished by Friday, and Dad's hand had started to go. I took the sable from the jar of turps and stood on the orange crate where he always stood, the mahl stick braced against the boards the way he had shown me when I was nine. The customer wanted one word across the top, in the swinging hand Dad was known for, rising from the lower left corner like smoke off a bonfire. Beautiful, the order slip said, underlined twice.

I had never painted a word that long. Dad sat on the kerb with his flask and told me to stop thinking about the letters and think about the gaps between them. The b wants to lean back, he said, the way a man does after a good dinner. Let the l go up as if it is looking for a door. I did the first stroke wrong and wiped it with a rag, and the second one went down so clean that a boy on a bicycle stopped to watch it dry.

By dusk the word ran from the pavement to the gutter, the loops of the f catching the last of the sun over the pier. Dad got up off the kerb without help, which I took as his opinion. He ran his thumb along the tail of the final e and it came away black, a smudge he did not mind.

The customer came on Saturday with his wife and read it out loud, slowly, and she laughed and said nobody had ever called her that on a board before. Dad told me afterwards that the best signs are the ones people forget are signs. I did not tell him I had signed my name in the bottom corner, small, where nobody would look.
