The snow had shut the pass at Hollin Gap for nine days when Wenna Crake came down the east side with a satchel of letters strapped against her chest. The carrier before her had gone over in October and never come out of the drift, so the valley had no one else to carry for it. She reached the cairn at the top as the light came up grey, her fingers white inside their wool, and found the tin where it always sat, wedged beneath the flat stone.

Inside were three letters, all addressed in the same pencilled hand to Tobias Rell at the mill house below. She knew that hand. It had come up the pass every week since the autumn, and every letter ended with the same line, written a little larger than the rest, as if the writer had leaned hard on the paper: the sun will rise, and we will try again. Wenna had never met the writer. She had only read the endings, because the tin was not hers to open, and she had kept to that rule through two winters.

The fourth letter had nothing written on the outside. She put it in her coat anyway, because the wind was getting up and she did not want to be caught on the high ground with a tin in her hands. By the time she reached the sheep hut her knuckles had split and the sky had gone the colour of old pewter. She sat on the step and read the fourth letter, though she was not certain it was meant for her eyes. It was short. It said only that the mill had closed, and that the writer was going south on the first thaw, and that Tobias should not wait at the window.

At the mill house she pushed the letters through the door slot one by one, and when she heard his boots on the flags she turned and started back up the track without waiting to be thanked. Halfway to the cairn the cloud broke open over the far ridge, and the sun came through low and yellow, and she stopped to watch it rise over the snow.
