Infinity heart with script word on neck
Fine line · Neck · Black and grey · Photo
A thin black outline of an infinity symbol loops into the shape of a heart, with a cursive script word set across its centre. The linework is fine and even, with no shading, and the ink is solid black. The tattoo is centred on the back of the neck, with the subject's head and hair cropped at the top of the frame.

Donald Rhind could draw the ferry's route with his eyes shut: out from Sule Beag past the skerry, round the pier at Ardnish, then back through the same narrow sound, a loop that crossed itself at the mouth of the bay. On the wheelhouse glass, where the breath of four passengers had fogged the window, he traced it with one finger while the mate shouted the tide times from the stern.

"You're drawing again," said Ishbel, who had kept the island's post for longer than either of them had been allowed in the pub. She was sorting a bag of letters on the counter, reading the addresses as if they were weather reports. "It's the crossing," Donald said. "Every run goes round and meets itself in the same place. Never a straight line out of here." She didn't look up. "Some of us have sailed the same sea for forty years and called it something else."
He thought about that all the way across. The tide was against them, and at the turn of the sound, where the water always piled into a standing hump, he saw a dinghy with one oar and a child in it waving a scarf. Donald cut the engine and let the boat drift until the lad could come alongside. Nobody on board asked why the ferry had stopped for a boy who should have known better.
Back at the post office that night, Ishbel had written a single word in careful copperplate on the back of a parcel label and pinned it to the board beside the stove, where the next crossing would see it. The ink was still wet, the letters curling into loops that closed back on themselves. Love, it said. Donald read it twice, then went out to start the engine.
