Heartbeat line with red heart on lower leg
Fine line · Calf · Mixed · Photo
A small tattoo shows a red outlined heart on the left, followed by a thin black heartbeat line that flows into a few black script letters. The linework is clean and fine, with the heart in red and the rest in black ink. The design sits on smooth skin, with the tattoo centred in the frame and the rest of the leg filling the background.

Sit where the flour won't land on your good coat, Tomasz, and mind the tray by your knee, it's still warm. Before the shutters go up, I'll tell you about Ada Venn, who could tell whether a loaf was ready by knocking on its base the way a doctor listens to a chest.

Her father ran the ovens on Pell Street, and the winter the power failed, the whole street went dark except her kitchen. The dough had to be knocked back by hand every hour or it would sour. She kept a pencil behind her ear and marked each rise on the wall in a wavering black line, up and down, up and down, the way the trace jumps on the cardiograph at the infirmary. Beside the line she scratched the initials of the fisherman she was waiting on, Ren Halloway, who had gone out before the storm and not come back.
Dawn came up grey and the line on the wall had gone flat. Ada didn't cry. She took the red chalk her father used to mark the good loaves for the church sale, drew a heart around the last clean rise of the night, and then went to unbolt the door.
Ren walked in at six with salt in his beard and the cold clinging to him like a coat. He saw the wall first. He always said that was when he knew he'd marry a woman who kept proper records. Now hush, the bread's ready, and that's the end of it.
