Heartbeat line and heart on a wrist

Fine line · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

A black heartbeat trace runs horizontally across the wrist, with a small solid red heart at the left end. The linework is thin and even, with the spikes of the trace sharp and clean. Black ink dominates the design, and the red heart is the only colour, set against pale skin and a dark background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Now sit down, the lot of you, because the bride's mother has been waving at me since the soup. This is about a paper roll. In the winter of nineteen sixty-one, a nurse called Morwenna Pryce worked nights on the cardiac ward at Bryn Hospital, where the machine that drew hearts on paper was older than she was and hummed like a fridge with a grudge.

Every hour she tore off a length of the roll and pinned it to the board, and every hour the needle scratched out the same story in black ink. Her Dafydd was a fisherman with a bad valve and a worse temper, and he'd been on that ward since Candlemas, cursing the ceiling tiles. One night the needle jumped. Morwenna went white, then she went to the stationery cupboard, found a red pencil, and before the doctor came on she drew a little heart at the very start of the trace, right where the line first began to climb. She told him it marked the spot where it all started. He said she was soft. She said he was impossible. Both were true.

He lived another thirty-one years. The paper went into a biscuit tin with the wedding photographs, and the tin came to me when she died, and I have it still, with the heart gone a bit pink at the edges.

So here's my toast. Keep your hearts where you can check on them, pet. Some folk keep theirs in a biscuit tin. I say a line like that is better drawn where you'll see it every morning, and where a red pencil can't be argued with. To the happy couple.
