Small outline heart with arrows on the ankle
Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
A small heart outline in thin black linework sits on the lower leg. The two ends of the heart curl into arrow points, and a few small dots sit near the join at the top and the lower right. The shading is solid black ink on pale skin, with a plain background of a plastic sheet and a little equipment at the edge of the frame.

Dear Nell,

The junction at Pellow Cross has finally been drawn on the new timetable, and you would laugh at it. Whoever made the map put the two branch lines in a loop that looks, from the signal box window, exactly like the heart Dad scratched on the signal hut door in 1961. Mr Tanner from the depot says the draughtsman did it on purpose, bless him, as a joke for the men who have to read the thing. I have pinned a copy above the lever frame so I can see it while the milk train goes through.
Things are quieter now the coal goes by road. Most days I log four trains and a fox. Last Tuesday a dog walked the whole length of the down platform and sat on the bench as if it had bought a ticket. I wrote it in the book under incidents, and Mr Tanner signed beside it without asking what it was.
The two arrows on the map point the way the lines run: one comes in from Hadley, one goes out towards the coast. The little dots are where the two lines nearly touch, and where the stationmaster used to stand with his flag. I keep thinking they are the spots where a person might step across if they wanted, and nobody would stop them. I don't know yet whether I'm going to step across.
Come up at Easter. I'll meet the 10:14 myself and show you the loop from the cab window. Bring your good coat, the wind off the marsh is worse than you remember, and bring the photographs of Mum so I can tell you which one I keep looking at.
Love, Jo
