Heartbreaker stiletto with dagger and heart
Traditional · Mixed · Flash
A drawn flash design showing a black stiletto shoe with a bare leg rising from its heel, and a dagger driven through a red heart beside it. Two red drops fall below, and the word HEARTBREAKER runs vertically along the heel in bold black capitals. Bold black outlines, flat red and yellow fills and soft grey shading give it a classic American traditional look on a cream background.

The icing had to be set by five, and Marjorie Quayle had never once in eleven years let a tray leave the back room soft at the edges. So when the flour van rattled up Tanner Street at ten to four, I was already elbow-deep in buttercream with the radio off, because the radio only played songs about leaving.

Marjorie wanted a stiletto for the Saturday market stall. Not a cake shaped like a shoe, she was clear about that, but a proper heel carved from a block of Madeira, the platform a row of cupcakes piped in yellow and gold so they looked like bullets in a belt. She wanted it to look like a joke. I wanted it to look like a warning, and I said so, and she told me warnings sell better than jokes if you put a price on them.
I was lettering the side in black fondant, HEARTBREAKER running up the heel, when the palette knife slipped and a bead of raspberry jam fell onto the marble. Then another. Two dark red drops, one after the other, like the cake had started bleeding before anyone had cut it. Marjorie leaned over my shoulder, looked at them, and laughed so hard she had to sit down on an upturned crate of eggs.
We left the drops where they fell. I cut a heart from a sheet of sugar paste, pressed a dagger of dark chocolate through it and set it on the instep, where the leg would be if there were a leg. At first light the tray went out to the front counter. Walter Ibe, who had once bought Marjorie a wedding cake and then not come to the wedding, stopped on the pavement and read the word twice. He bought the shoe without looking up. The window behind him was going pink, and the last drop of jam was still wet on the board where I had not thought to wipe it.
