Never Enough banner on a studded cylinder
Traditional · Mixed · Flash
A bold traditional-style flash drawing of a cylindrical object with rounded studs, a teal and red central band and a brown cap at the top. A yellow ribbon banner reading NEVER ENOUGH wraps across the middle, with a dark brown band beneath it. Thick black outlines and flat, saturated fills give it a classic bold look, and a faint red glow sits behind the object on a plain white background.

The drum came ashore on the tide with its brass studs gone green and its lid welded shut by salt, and Mairi Gow stood on the rocks and would not let the men break it open. Her husband had gone out for lamp oil in March and never come back, and the island had been dark ever since, the light on Carra Skerry burning on peat and prayer. Mairi said the drum would tell her what it held when it was ready.

She carried it up the hill on a barrow and set it against the stone wall where the wind could not reach. Every morning she rubbed the yellow ribbon painted on its side with a wet thumb, until the colour faded to the shade of old butter, and every evening she said the words aloud the way her mother had taught her: a thing is never enough until you stop asking it to be. Children came to watch. The minister came and said it was a sin to talk to a barrel.
In May the lid gave way on its own, the way lids do when the weather has finished with them. Inside was no oil at all but a bundle of charts, a tin of ship's biscuit, and a letter in a hand she knew, saying he had found the far fishing grounds and would be home when the catch was enough to see them through. Mairi read it twice on the step. Then she lit the lamp with a match from her apron pocket, and the light went out across the water as far as the mainland, and she sat down beside the drum and did not ask it for anything more.
