Hedgehog holding a daisy illustration
Mixed · Flash
A small hedgehog walks to the right, looking up at a daisy held above it on a thin curved stem. The spines are drawn with loose dark ink strokes, while the body is shaded in soft grey and pale blue washes. Pink cheeks and a yellow daisy centre add colour against the plain white background, which is composed as a single centred figure.

The drizzle had thinned to nothing by the time Hob reached the stile, but he kept the daisy up anyway, stem held high over his prickled head, because a flower carried low gets its petals bruised and everyone in the hedgerow knew it. He had picked it from a crack in the churchyard wall that morning. It was the only one in bloom for a mile, and he had decided, somewhere between the lych gate and the ditch, that it belonged to Wenna Tallow at the bottom of the lane.

Wenna lived alone in the house with the blue door. Since the spring she had kept her curtains shut and her milk bottles on the step, and the village had started calling her the quiet one, the way villages do. Hob had no opinion on this. He only knew that she sat at her window every afternoon with her hands folded, and that a window with nothing in it looks the same from any distance.
He reached the blue door as the sun came out and found it unlatched. Inside, the kitchen smelt of cold ash. He set the daisy in the jam jar by the sill, the one with the chipped rim, and was about to leave when a chair scraped behind him. Wenna stood in the doorway in her coat, as if she had been on her way out for the first time in weeks.
'Well,' she said, looking at the flower and not at him. 'Somebody had better water it, then.' Hob waited. She filled the jar from the tap, and when she finally turned round she was smiling, and the kettle went on for the first time in a long while.
