Cartoon giraffe with heart spots

Black and grey · Flash

A simple cartoon giraffe stands on a patch of hatched ground, with a large round head, small horns and a long neck. Its body is filled with heart-shaped spots, and the head, legs and ground are shaded with fine pen hatching and short strokes. The drawing is in black ink on white and is centred on the page with plenty of empty space around it.

The snow had sealed the Fellgate road for three days, and by Thursday the guests at the Hollin Arms had run out of things to say to one another. Ruth, who kept the bar, found a stub of carpenter's pencil behind the till and began drawing on the back of a beer mat, because her hands needed something to do while the kettle sulked on the range.

What came out was a giraffe. She hadn't planned it. It stood on a scribbled tuft of grass with its big round head tipped sideways, as if it had just heard its name called from another room. Its neck was far too long for the mat and it didn't seem to mind. She gave it hearts for spots, because her mother had always said hearts were what you used when you couldn't decide between a cow and a giraffe, and the creature looked rather pleased about it.

Old Mr Sowerby, snowed in since Monday with a cold and a crossword, leaned over the counter to inspect it. "That's no giraffe," he said. "Giraffes don't blush." Ruth said nothing, but she had shaded its cheeks, and he was right. He pinned the mat above the fire with a drawing pin, and for the rest of the evening the giraffe kept its sideways look over the heads of the card players.

By morning the plough had come through and the road was open. Ruth found the mat in the pocket of Mr Sowerby's coat, which he had left hanging by the door, with a note under the drawing pin in careful capitals: HE SHOULD SEE THE SEA. She propped it on the windowsill facing the white hills, and when the first car crawled past with its headlamps still on, she swore the giraffe's neck had grown another inch.
