Hedgehog made of flowers on a thigh
Traditional · Thigh · Colour · Photo
A hedgehog facing right is built from a mass of leaves, blossoms and sprigs, with its back and quills formed by the foliage. Bold black outlines define the shapes, with solid fills in greens, teal, orange and red and short red radiating strokes around the edge. The design sits centrally on the thigh against a plain, softly lit background.

Orla had been told the hedgehog would not survive the crossing, and she had packed it anyway, tucked in the seed vault's lowest drawer beneath the rye and the bean stock. Seventy-one years out from Earth, the ship's hydroponic decks smelled of wet soil and hot copper, and nobody aboard had seen a living animal larger than a moth.

Her grandmother's notebook listed the hedgehog as cargo with a question mark beside it. Orla kept the box on the tray of her sampling cart, where the grow-lights warmed the glass. Each morning she misted the bedding and checked the small ledger of heartbeats, and each morning the creature uncurled a little more, as though it had decided the ship was a hedge like any other.
When the cabin pressure dropped during the long burn, she pressed her palm to the cold steel of the hatch and counted breaths. The hedgehog snuffled against her wrist as if the ship had not nearly killed them both. She thought of the lane behind her mother's house, where the hawthorn had been cut back every autumn and still came up thick and white each spring, climbing over the old fence posts.
They made landfall in a valley the colour of rust and teal. Orla carried the box down the ramp at dawn, lifted the lid, and set the hedgehog on a bed of bruised clover. It sniffed, turned its back on the sky, and walked straight into a thicket of red-stemmed scrub as though it had been waiting there all along. She laughed, and the sound carried a long way over the new grass.
