Dreamcatcher and rose on a thigh

Traditional · Thigh · Colour · Photo

A colour tattoo on the outer thigh shows a red rose with green leaves at the upper left, beside a dreamcatcher with an eight-pointed star web, a braided brown ring and three hanging feathers. The feathers are teal and green with black outlines, and two end in small heart-shaped gold and red charms. Bold black outlines, solid fills and a plain background give it a classic flash look.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

You have the red wool still between your teeth when the Lark Ellen noses round the breakwater at Scarrow Quay with her sail in rags and her tiller lashed. Nobody is steering her but a gull perched on the bowsprit. You drop the net needle and run, past the fish-wives, past the chandler's shuttered window, down the slick steps to where Gideon Pell is already waist deep in the surf with a coil of rope over his shoulder.

The boat carries a hoop of plaited rope strung across the foremast, with a web inside it spun from waxed twine. Gideon's daughter Ada made it the winter before he sailed, pulling the star shape tight with a hot needle and a patience nobody in the town could match. Three feathers hang from the ring, teal and green and black at the edges, and at the tip of each one she tied a little gold heart with a drop of red enamel in the middle. When the wind comes off the sea the feathers knock together like someone tapping on a door.

You wade out and catch the rope. Together you haul the Lark Ellen in, and the dreamcatcher swings loose from its nail, and Gideon takes it down with both hands as if it might still be holding something in. He asks you whether the web has caught anything. You tell him the truth, which is that it has caught only the wind, and that the wind is the thing that brought him home.

By evening the rose in Ada's window box has opened, the red petals bright against the grey harbour wall. Gideon hangs the hoop above the door, the feathers tapping, and the quay goes quiet around the sound of it.
