Hedgehog with a lantern and skull
Neo-trad · Colour · Photo
A cartoon hedgehog in a jacket and cap holds a lantern with a skull inside, standing on rocks with a small bloody detail near its feet. Bold outlines with soft shading give the figure volume, and the image is rendered in purple, blue, red and brown ink. The composition is centred on the hedgehog, with the lantern on the left and the rocks filling the bottom edge.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction
Pim had been the lamplighter on Gullstone Rock for nineteen winters, and in all that time nobody had asked why the lantern he carried down the shingle each dusk had a skull rattling inside it. He told the gulls it was a gift from his grandmother. The gulls did not care.

On the night the Marigold came in low, the fog sat so thick on the water that Pim could not see his own boots. He lifted the lantern high, the way his father had taught him, and the skull's jaw swung open on its wire as if it meant to shout. Captain Oddie Brack had once sworn to him that a skull in a lantern would call a drowning man ashore. Pim had never believed a word of it. He believed it now, watching a dark sail slide past the reef.
He scrambled out over the wet stones, caught his paw on a barnacle, and left a small red spot on the rock that the tide would soon take. He did not stop. He swung the light left, then right, and the Marigold's bow turned away from the teeth of the reef and found the channel.
By morning the captain was on the quay with a sack of salt herring and a pair of new boots, which he pushed across the planks without a word. Pim wore the boots until the soles wore thin. The skull stayed in the lantern, grinning at the fog, because a lamp that had brought one ship home was not a lamp you hung up for good.
