Heart of wings with sleeping birds on a thigh

Thigh · Mixed · Photo

Three small sleeping birds sit inside a heart shape formed by feathered wings, with a bird skull and ribcage detail visible within the wing structure. The linework is fine and the shading is soft and smooth in black and grey, with a few touches of red at the lower feather tips. The tattoo fills the frame, centred on a fair-skinned upper thigh against a plain background.

Tom, I'm writing this on the tailgate outside the Halfway Sink diner because the Ford won't take the grade past Ransom Wells without its fan belt singing. You'd laugh at me, a biro that keeps dying and the dust turning everything the colour of a rusted penny by five o'clock. I've been stuck here two days now, which is the longest I've stayed anywhere since Dad's funeral.

The mess is three fledglings. I found them in the old pump house behind the diner, wedged in a nest of baling twine above the door. Their mother was lying on the sill, all feathers and light bones, her wings folded over the nest as if she'd meant to keep the wind off them. Mrs Okafor who runs the diner said to leave them be, because up here the wind takes anything that isn't tied down. I tied a dish towel over the gap instead and fed them scraps of cold bacon from my cooler on the end of a matchstick.

Each dusk they tuck their heads under their wings and sleep in a knot, and the evening breeze lifts the feathers so the whole heap seems to breathe. I sat watching until the truck ticked cold. I think I've been driving about with the wrong map for years, and it took three birds in a pump house to show me.

I'll take them to the rescue in Ajo in the morning, once the Ford's sorted. Keep the spare key under the bumper like always. Ring me when you get this, and tell Aunt Pat the lilacs are her fault, not mine. Love, N.
