Cheshire Cat and Mad Hatter portrait
Realism · Other · Colour · Photo
A large tattoo shows the Cheshire Cat with a wide grin and green-blue eyes at the top, above a realistic portrait of the Mad Hatter in a red top hat with wide green eyes. The shading is smooth and detailed, with soft blended tones in the fur and skin. Swirling blue and white shapes fill the background behind the cat and frame the piece against the skin.

He had not yet learned to ignore the cat.

It sat on the windowsill above the bolts of felt, grinning at the bus queue as if it knew the fare. Every morning it was in a different place, and every morning the grin was a little wider, the teeth a little more numerous than a cat's should be. Dev swept round its tail. Mrs Pilling said that was the only sensible way to deal with it.
On the ninth afternoon a man in a green coat came in asking for a hat for a funeral he was not sure he wanted to attend. He tried on a grey bowler, then a boater, then a red top hat so tall it brushed the lamp. The cat laughed. Dev turned round and there was nothing on the sill at all.
"Suits you," said the man, in a voice like a cork coming out of a bottle. He tipped the brim and walked out into the rain. Mrs Pilling came through from the back with her spectacles on her head and looked at the empty windowsill for a long time. "Right," she said. "Put the kettle on, then. We'll be wanting the big box."
