Feast of Saint Brendan. The crate from Cousin Mabel finally came up from the station with the carter, and Brother Oswin had to sign for it twice because the seal was bent. Inside, packed in straw and an old local newspaper, were forty lollipops striped like a barber's pole, a tin of wrapped gumdrops, and a tin shaped like a small white cat with a red bow the size of a saucer. Mabel swears it is only a cake tin.

The Abbot came down to the cellar at Vespers, sniffed the air, and declared that sugar was a vanity we had renounced for Lent, and that a thing with a bow was a vanity twice over. He confiscated the crate. I noticed he did not confiscate the cat.
