Cupcake, cartoon cat and pansies on the back

Neo-trad · Back · Colour · Photo

A large, densely packed design covers most of the upper back, centred on a cupcake topped with a swirl of pink, blue and green icing and a small skull. A cartoon cat with a pink bow, a lollipop with a spiral pattern, purple pansies with orange centres and two broken hearts surround it. Bold black outlines, smooth colour fills and soft shading give it a bright, saturated look.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The fair had been dying since the spring the river rose over the ring, and Tobias Crane, who kept the sweet stall, counted his sugar by the spoonful. Every evening the cat came up from under the big top, pink bow pinned crooked behind one ear, and sat on the lollipop stand as though it paid rent. Nobody had ever bought it. It did not seem to want selling.

The strongman said the cat was the last of a travelling company that had lost its name at a crossroads. Mrs Ainsley, who juggled eggs, said it was a gift from the dead. The children said it could count. Tobias only knew that when he beat the icing for the cupcakes, the pink swirled itself into a little skull unless he stirred the bowl the other way, and that the cat watched him do it with eyes like two dropped pennies.

In November the fair was to be sold to a man from the coast who wanted the field for flats. Tobias made one last batch, pressed purple pansies into the tops, and set a striped lollipop in every paper case. He stirred widdershins, the way his gran had taught him, and the skull melted away. At dusk the cat ate one cupcake whole, licked its paw, and walked out past the last caravan into the dark.

The buyer found the field bare in the morning. There were two broken hearts pressed into the frost, and a row of lollipop sticks standing in the mud like candles. Tobias was gone with the cat, and the sugar was gone with him, though a boy from the village swore the sticks were still sweet when he licked them.
