Cartoon cat and candy sleeve across fingers

Neo-trad · Hand · Colour · Photo

A bold cartoon cat character with a red bow appears on the fingers, alongside a second cat in a patterned outfit, flowers and swirling shapes. Thick black outlines define the designs, and the shading uses soft pastel and bright tones of blue, pink, orange and purple. The tattoo wraps across several fingers, with a red and white swirled sweet at the bottom edge.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Nobody in Porthgwidden could say where the white cat came from, only that she turned up at Gull's Rest on the morning of the summer fair with a red ribbon knotted at her ear and a damp paper bag in her teeth. Mrs Tregarthen, who kept the boarding house and had no patience for animals, set out a saucer of milk to be rid of her. The cat drank it, then carried the bag up the stairs to the room where the lodger Edwin Crake was packing his trunk.

Crake was a confectioner's son, come to the coast to sell his late father's boiled sweets before the damp got into them. The bag held three lollipops, each painted with a pink flower and wrapped in cellophane gone yellow with age. The cat set them in a row along his windowsill, one by one, and then sat down on the last.

Every night after that she brought him a sweet, and every morning the drawer where he kept the lollipops was empty and a shell, a button or a pebble lay in their place. He never sold a single one. He began to think she was keeping accounts, and that the fair had given her a debt she meant to collect.

On his last night the tide came high over the harbour wall, and the cat walked him down to the rocks where the shells were kept. Under a ledge he found his father's tin, rusted shut, with a painted lid of pink and blue. Inside lay every lollipop his father had ever made, and a note in a careful hand: pay the cat in sugar. Crake laughed until he cried, then paid her, and the cat walked off into the dark with her ribbon bright against the sea.
