Cupcake, cat and broken hearts on upper back

Neo-trad · Back · Colour · Photo

A large, bold tattoo covers the upper back with a cupcake topped with swirled icing and a skull cherry at its centre. A cartoon cat with a pink bow sits beside a striped lollipop, with purple flowers and several broken hearts arranged around it. Solid black outlines and smooth colour shading in pink, teal, purple, red and orange give the piece a vivid, graphic look.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The cat had been sitting on the tin since six o'clock, and Mabel Crane would not be the one to move it. It was a porcelain thing with a pink bow and a face the colour of pond water, and it had come in a box of jumble from a house on Gull Terrace, along with three lace doilies and a man's pipe that still smelled of apples. Mabel had decided it was lucky. Her shop, the Sugar Hook on the seafront at Blackmoor Bay, had not made a penny since March, and the cat had arrived the same week the council began talking about pulling the pier down.

On Saturday the councillor came in for his usual, a cupcake with a cherry on top, which he always sent back for being too sweet. Mabel had been baking since four. She had piped the icing into the spirals her mother taught her, pink and mint and cream, and then, because he had cut the pier lights to save money, she set a little sugar skull on the cherry. He saw it and laughed, then saw her face and stopped.

He bought four cakes and the big striped lollipop from the jar by the till, and he took them outside to sit on the bench while the tide came in. By the time the bay was full he had stopped talking about the pier. Mabel swept up the sugar hearts that had cracked in the moulds, a dozen of them split clean down the middle, and found she could not throw them out. She lined them along the windowsill beside the cat. Then she put the kettle on for herself, and the cat looked at her with its pale unblinking eyes, as if it had known all along what sugar could do.
