Hello Kitty flash with roses and heart

Traditional · Colour · Flash

A Hello Kitty character sits in front of a red heart, with two pink roses above and a banner reading Secret Love across the top. A second banner beneath reads Hello Kitty, and dark green leaves frame the design. The bold black outlines and flat colour fills sit on a pale pink damask pattern.

Right, sit closer, and mind the chair with the broken spring, it's been waiting for someone daft enough to sit in it since the strike. You'll want to hear about the tin. Every front room in Hollin Row had wallpaper with pink swirls and hearts, but Agnes Pryce had the finest, a damask the colour of boiled sweets, which she hung herself the spring her husband first went down the Blackrake shaft.

Dai Pryce was no hand with a letter. So before each shift he folded a scrap of paper and slid it into the biscuit tin on the top shelf, the one with the white cat on the lid, the red bow, the rose tucked behind one ear and the ribbon reading Secret Love. Agnes would find the note when the kettle boiled. Most nights it was only a few words. Lamp's cracked. Bread's in the crock. Back by six.

Then came the Thursday the cage stuck at three hundred feet and the pit whistle sounded long and flat. For four hours the whole village stood at the pithead with its caps in its hands. Agnes did not cry in front of anyone. She went home, climbed onto the chair with the broken spring, and reached for the tin with her eyes shut, because she could not bear to look at it empty.

Dai came up at ten past nine, grey as slate, with a cut over one eye and nothing to say. She didn't ask him anything. She took the tin down, unfolded the note he'd left that morning and read it aloud to him, though it said only what it always said. He laughed until he had to sit on that chair, and it held, the way it always had, for the two of them.
