Hello Kitty heart and banner tattoo design
Traditional · Colour · Flash
A bold outlined design of Hello Kitty with a red bow, resting her paws on a pink heart. A grey banner with black lettering reading Hello Kitty wraps across the heart, with pink flowers and grey leaves around it. The thick black linework and flat pink fills sit against a plain white background.

The white cat came up from Hollin Pit in the pocket of your father's donkey jacket, wrapped in brown paper that smelled of carbide and wet slate. A travelling man had been flogging them at the Welfare fair for a shilling, and your father bought one because you had stood by the rifle range for twenty minutes without crying. Your mother said the pit had enough dirt in it without fetching more home, so the cat went on the mantelpiece, propped against the clock, its red bow bright as a lamp at the cage head.

The colliery shut on a wet Friday in March. Men stood at the pithead gates with their hands in their pockets, not knowing what to do with them now. On the Monday you took the cat down, wrapped it in your school scarf, and carried it to the bus for Durham. Your father watched from the step and said nothing, which was how he said most things. The heart under the cat's paws was the colour of a boiled sweet, and the grey banner across it had lost its shine where your thumb had rubbed it every night since you were nine.
The bus smelled of wet coats and diesel. Somewhere past Gateshead you unwrapped the scarf and found a folded note tucked under the bow, in his square capitals: KEEP HER STRAIGHT. You had never known him to write anything but addresses and the odd bet. You turned the cat so the bow sat level and held it on your knee the rest of the way, while the fields went past, grey and unlit, the way the Row looked from the top of the bank.
The flat in Leeds has a sill that catches the morning light, and a landlady who asks no questions about pit heads. You prop the cat against the glass, bow straight, and go out to find work. When you come back the sun is on it, and the pink heart is the only bright thing in the room, so you leave it exactly there.
