Hello Kitty in kimono on upper arm

Japanese · Upper arm · Colour · Photo

The tattoo shows a cartoon cat character in a red kimono with gold and purple patterns, holding a folding fan, with a flower clip on her head. Pink flowers with yellow centres and green leaves wrap around the shoulder and upper arm. Bold outlines and flat, saturated colour fill the design, with pink, red, green, purple and yellow dominating against the pale skin.

Sit down, sit down, you'll not get the good ladle if you stand there gawping. Forty-one years I've cooked on boats, and the thing I never tell at the rail is about the cat in the kimono. Aye, that one. She came up the gangway at Hull in the rain with a paper fan tucked under one arm and a purple flower clip in her hair, and not a scrap of luggage. The bosun wanted her off. The skipper said she could have the bunk above the potato locker if she behaved herself.

She behaved better than most of the men. Never sick, never swore, sat on the bench by the stove every night and waved that fan at the steam as if she were cooling a duchess. The first winter we lost the grounds to the Norwegians and nobody could sleep for shouting, but she'd just wave the fan, slow, and the shouting dropped to muttering and then to nothing.

Then one night off Peterhead the galley door tore off its hinge, the wind came straight in, and the fire went out. I was on my knees with a box of matches and a wet sack, and she hopped up onto the rail above the stove, snapped that fan open, and fanned the embers until they caught. Real flame, roaring up the flue. Nobody saw it but me and the boy with the mop.

Next morning the bench was empty. Her bunk was made up tight, the fan lying on the pillow, the purple clip beside it. I never saw her again, but every time the galley smoke goes up straight in a blow, I tip my cap to that empty bench and say thank you, madam.
