A cartoon zombie Hello Kitty figure with green skin, a red bow, a knife in its head, bandages and bloody wounds, holding a blue cupcake topped with a pink brain. A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The cat was already sitting on the windowsill when Dilys Probert unlocked the welfare kitchen, upright in its red bow as if it had paid the rent. Nobody in Ystrad Gwyn had ever seen a green thing like it, though Dilys had seen plenty come up in the lamp cage with the night shift.

It had arrived in the autumn with a bread knife through the top of its head, like a spoon left in a pudding, and it had no interest in pasties or tea. It wanted sugar. It wanted the blue paper cases stacked by the urn, and when Dilys shooed it with a tea towel it made a noise like a kettle coming to the boil and stared at her with one good eye while the other wandered off to the left on its own.

The Fête Committee bake-off was at two. Mrs Olwen Vaughan had taken the rosette three years running with her Victoria sponge and wore the look of a woman who had never once been surprised. Dilys had spent Friday night piping pink icing and sugared brains onto a dozen cupcakes, because she was not going to watch Olwen carry the cup down the chapel steps again.

At two the judges sat down to taste. The cat strolled in through the hall doors, hopped onto the end of the trestle, and ate Olwen's sponge in three bites, then her cardboard prize card, then looked straight at the cupcakes with an expression Dilys could only call hungry. The judges gave the rosette to the brains without a vote. Olwen did not speak to her for a year. That evening Dilys found the cat asleep on the chapel step with blue icing on its paws, the bread knife gleaming under the streetlamp, and she left the back door open for it every night after that.
