Sugar skull cat on an arm
Traditional · Forearm · Mixed · Photo
A cat face is drawn in the style of a sugar skull, with a diamond motif on the forehead and swirling scroll details across the head and ears. The bold black outlines are filled with grey shading and small areas of red on the eyes, ears and muzzle. The design fills most of the frame against a dark background, with the skin visible at the edges.

You arrive at the reunion in the school hall, where the same wonky basketball hoop still hangs above the stage and someone has strung paper marigolds from the climbing ropes. Mr Pargeter, who taught you chemistry and never once learned your name, is holding a plastic cup of squash and asking everyone which year they left. Your old friend Dervla is already at the trestle table, sorting name badges into piles by surname, and she slides yours across without looking up.

The cat comes up within minutes. Nobody remembers who named her, but everybody remembers Marigold, the grey stray with a white diamond on her forehead who lived under the science block and was fed by half the Year Elevens in exchange for keeping the rats off the bins. When she sat in the sun by the bike sheds she looked like she was marking your homework. Dervla says she died the summer after you left. Someone buried her under the hawthorn by the netball courts, in a biscuit tin lined with a school jumper.
Pargeter finds you by the squash jug. He says he never told anybody this, but he left a saucer of milk out behind the lab every morning for eleven years, and the caretaker threatened to report him more than once. He presses a folded envelope into your hand with your name on the front in the handwriting you remember from detention. Inside is a photograph of the hawthorn and a single line: she always liked you best, you were the only one who never shut the door on her.
You slip out before the playlist turns to slow songs and walk to the netball courts in the dusk. Under the hawthorn a small grey stone has been set into the grass, a diamond scratched into its face. You crouch and set your name badge down beside it, and in the last of the light it still reads your name as if it were the first day.
