Dark brown henna-style mandala and necklace design with gold dots across a woman's upper back, seen from behind.

Henna-style mandala necklace design on back

Back · Mixed · Photo

A woman's bare upper back is decorated with an intricate dark brown design resembling a necklace, with a central mandala above a long pendant-like motif. Fine dotted and scalloped linework builds up the pattern, and gold dot accents add highlights along the curves. The design fills the centre of the frame against a soft, blurred indoor background, with an orange fabric draped over one side.

The nets came in from the Skerrow boats every Tuesday, heavy with weed and sulking gulls, and my aunt Sunita would spread them across the shed floor like a bride's train. She taught me to find the broken knot before the tear, to follow the mesh until it told me where it had been hurt.

The pattern she drew on the back of my hand each winter, with a cone of paste from a tin, was a mandala that ran from wrist to knuckle. Dark dots first, then the scallops, then a teardrop that narrowed toward the fingertip. She said a good net was the same thing: a rosary of small loops that kept the sea out by agreeing with itself.

The summer I was sixteen the Ellen May went down off the Scarrow bank and the boats came back with three empty berths. Nobody spoke about the nets for a month. Then Sunita carried an old net to the water's edge, shook out the sodden lace, and set me to rebuilding the centre knot where the pattern began.

It took us all August. When the last loop closed, the teardrop hung long and heavy from the mesh, and the gulls that had screamed all month went quiet on the rail. She tapped the grey-gold twine with one finger, the way you would a bell, and said a net is only a necklace the sea has not yet noticed.
