Mandala and paisley shoulder piece

Fine line · Shoulder · Black and grey · Photo

A black and white photograph of an ornamental tattoo over the shoulder and upper arm, showing a large central mandala with petal-like shapes and layered paisley motifs. The linework is fine and uniform, with some areas of dotted shading that give depth to the leaves and scrolls. The arm is angled diagonally across the frame against a soft grey background, and the face is not visible.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The block split along the grain in the third week of the wet season, and Oona Hale spent the evening with a pot of fish glue and a candle, pressing the two halves together on the kitchen table while rain tapped at the shutters. Her uncle had carved the mandala himself, eight petals opening from a central rosette, each one cut so fine that the gouge had to be sharpened after every six strokes. Nobody on Carrick Isle could print a cloth like it, and nobody else had the patience to try.

The ferry brought indigo from the mainland on Thursdays, along with Idris Vane, who mixed the dye and complained about the salt in everything. He held the glued block up to the window and squinted at the hairline crack running through the paisley scrolls. "Print it anyway," he said. "The crack will show as a fine white line. Nobody will care except you."

She printed it anyway. The first shawl came off the table with the petals bright and the leaves dark, and where the crack ran through a scroll, a pale thread of undyed cloth curled like a stray vine. Mrs Ferrier, who had ordered the shawl for her daughter's wedding, ran her thumb along the line for a long time before she smiled. "That's where it breathes," she said, and paid in coins that smelled of the sea.

By dusk the cloths hung from the line strung across the harbour wall, rows of blue and white snapping in the wind like sails that had never left the shore. Oona stood beneath them with her hands stained to the wrist, counting the dots of shading on one leaf and losing her place at forty.
