Her Name Was Rose banner with sonic screwdriver
Traditional · Colour · Flash
A bold, flat illustration of a male profile looking upwards with reddish hair and a striped jacket with a blue collar. Below the figure, a blue rose and an orange leaf sit behind a cream banner reading Her Name Was Rose, with a cream and brown sonic screwdriver laid diagonally across them. The design uses thick dark outlines, flat fills and a dark brown background, with the lettering set in a script style.

Dear Ines,

The ferry didn't come on Tuesday, so this post will be late too, and I have had three days to get cross about it. Mrs Galloway at the shop says the boat is waiting on a part. Everything on Hallin is waiting on a part.
I found Dad's tool in the bottom drawer of the dresser, under the tide tables. You'll remember it, the slim grey thing with the blue glass at the tip that he said was for fixing anything with a fault in it. It still hums when I hold it near the kitchen clock, and the clock, which has been stopped since 1987, ticked twice and went quiet again. I haven't told anyone that. They'd think I'd been out here on my own too long.
The blue rose by the back wall is flowering, though it shouldn't be. Dad planted it the spring Mum left, and nobody on the island has ever got a rose to take in this salt wind. Last week it opened all the way for the first time, a blue so deep it looked wet. I stood out there in my dressing gown until the light went, then came in and wrote it all down so I wouldn't have to believe it by myself.
I'm sending the tool with this letter, registered, as he would have wanted. Keep it somewhere dry. If the rose has gone over by the time you read this, press one petal in the back of your diary. And if the clock starts again, don't come home to fix it. Let it run.
Love, Rose
