BB-8 droid with roses and banner

Traditional · Mixed · Flash

A droid resembling BB-8 sits at the centre of the design, with its white and orange body shaded in grey and a black antenna. Two red roses with green leaves sit on either side, and a pale banner wraps across the droid with the words THEY SEE ME ROLLIN in black lettering. Bold black outlines and a radiating sunburst behind the subject sit on a flat blue background.

Nell Ashby was halfway up the Harrow Flats road with a sack of water bottles over one shoulder when the round thing came bouncing down the verge towards her, one blue lens blinking like a tired eye. She had heard about it from the bread woman in Crane's Cross. A scrap machine that had walked out of the salt works, rolled past the watchtowers, and was still rolling.

Its name was Tuppence, and it did not stop for anyone. The patrol trucks hunted machines that stayed in one place long enough to be remembered, so Tuppence never stayed anywhere. It rolled on the open road in the full glare of day, which was the one thing no one expected a thing on the run to do. Across its white flank ran a banner Nell's late mother had painted with red enamel and a steady hand, the words THEY SEE ME ROLLIN in letters as black as tar, and two roses on either side so the watchmen would think it was just another roadside shrine.

A grey truck came over the rise at noon, slowed, and idled beside them. The driver leaned out, squinting at the sunburst of dust that the wheel threw up behind Tuppence, and at Nell with her sack and her sunburnt cheeks. He looked for a long moment at the painted roses. Then he laughed, shook his head, and drove on towards the coast.

Nell waited until the dust had settled. She pulled a crushed petal from her pocket, the last one from her mother's bush, and tucked it into the seam of the droid's shell. Tuppence chirped, turned a neat circle in the road, and rolled on towards the hills.
