Ruth tied the last bundle of the season on the back step, string between her teeth, the lavender still faintly warm from the loft where it had hung since July. She pulled each knot twice, because the wind came straight off the harbour wall and had undone every careless one she had ever made. Below her the boats knocked against the quay, and the gulls quarrelled over a split crab pot.

Dennis Pell had been climbing up from the slipway every Friday since Easter to buy a single sprig for a buttonhole he never wore. He said his mother kept a bowl of it in a front room in Leeds, though he had never mentioned his mother before, and Ruth had learnt not to ask anything that might keep him talking longer than he wanted. Today he was early. His boots were still dark with the tide line and he held his cap in both hands like a man waiting outside a surgery.

"I'll take the whole bundle," he said. She named a price three times what she had charged in June. He paid it without counting the coins, and she thought at first he was saying goodbye, the way men did when a boat was sold and the mooring fees stopped.

He asked her to leave the string long. She cut it no shorter than she always did, and he tucked the bundle under his arm and walked off up the hill towards the bus stop. When she looked down, the two loose tails were still lying on the wet step, pale and curling, as if someone had left a message for her to finish.
