Wildflowers and roots on a forearm

Botanical · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A bunch of wildflowers rises up the forearm, with poppy-style blooms at the top and daisy-like flowers lower down, all joined to a tangle of roots at the base. The work uses fine black linework with dotted and hatched shading to give the petals and leaves depth. The piece is entirely in black and grey ink and is centred on the arm against a plain background.

Dear Win,

The cook has taken a dislike to my box. He says a parcel of mud has no business in his galley, and he has moved it three times since the Azores, each time to a shelf nearer the stove. I have moved it back each time, because the roots would not survive another shake. Every morning I wet the moss with a tin cup from the fresh water cask, and every morning the little poppies lift their heads a finger's breadth higher, as if they had heard the sea was not the end of things.

You will laugh at how carefully I dug. I took the bunch from the chalk above Salcombe on the last clear day before we sailed, a whole fistful of them, poppies tall as my hand, the daisies bunched low where the wind could not reach them, and the roots pulled up whole, every hair of them. Mr Pell the botanist would have scolded me for the time it took. I did not care. I wanted something from home that could be carried without being cut.

We are three weeks out from Madeira. The captain says we will make Cape Town by the new moon, and I have decided I will plant them there, in the shade of the wall behind the Company house, if the gardener will let me. I have also decided I will not write to Mother until I have. She will ask why I troubled to carry weeds across the world. Tell her they were the only part of England that did not ask me to come back.

Your brother, Tom
