Hibiscus flower on the side of the body
Botanical · Other · Black and grey · Photo
A large hibiscus bloom with five ruffled petals and a protruding stamen is tattooed on smooth skin. The petals use fine grey shading and dark crevices to show curves and depth, with highlights left as bare skin. The flower fills most of the frame against a pale background and a black waistband.

The glasshouse was the last building on the farm that didn't leak, and in January Hal Penrose went in each morning with a kettle to check the paraffin heater, because the hibiscus would not survive a hard frost. It had come from his late wife's sister in Plymouth, a cutting in a jam jar forty years back, and it had outlasted the sister, the second milking shorthorn, and most of the roof slates.

Nobody on the farm believed it would flower in winter. The vet's wife said it was sulking. Hal talked to it the way he talked to the sheepdog, low and without expecting much back. He pinched off the yellowing leaves and rubbed the grit from the pot rim with his thumb, the way Ruth used to.
On the nineteenth of February a bud that had sat hard as a peppercorn for a month began to loosen. Hal saw it from the doorway with his breath clouding in front of him. By dusk the five petals had unrolled, ruffled at the edges like a skirt pulled from a drawer, the colour of wet slate in the low light, and a tongue of stamen stood up through the middle, dusted and bent toward the glass.
He didn't ring anyone. He sat on an upturned crate with his cap in his hands and watched the thing hold itself open in the cold, and when the heater clicked off he didn't get up to fix it. By morning the petals had gone papery at the edges. He picked the bloom, pressed it between the pages of the family Bible at Ruth's place in Ruth, and went out to feed the ewes.
